'A Journey Within: Self-Awareness and Personal Development of a Youth Worker”

Gloucester, UK

09 - 16.05.2013

SMIT "CREATOR" members were participating in a TC titled A Journey Within: Self-Awareness and Personal Development of a Youth Worker all co-ordinated by ASHA Centre and held in Gloucester, UK.

The main theme of this project is the self-assessment of youth workers with a focus on personal
development of course participants as youth workers and youth leaders. The project will include a detailed examination and self-evaluation techniques with the aim of improving the participants personal and professional development as international youth workers and group leaders/facilitators of multicultural youth encounters. The principal aim of the project is an increased quality of youth activities organised around Europe (both local as well as international) through the use of personal development and self-assessment techniques combining elements of theatre, philosophy, management and spiritual tools. The project will also help participants mentor young people in self-reflection - a fast growing sector within European youth work.

From the 9th to the 16th of May 2013 I took part in a project called “A Journey Within” in the Forest of Dean near Gloucester, England. The training enabled me to spend a valuable time in an amazing place and with a group of wonderful people from all over Europe (Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Spain and of course the United Kingdom). Through many different activities and with a use of various techniques (i.e. connected to theatre, philosophy, spiritual tools) we were all trying to develop ourselves and gather experience in becoming a youth worker/leader. In addition, the training helped us to get to the conclusion that to be an active part of the team you first need to understand yourself. And even though we were mainly focusing on self-awareness, we also got an opportunity to get to know each other better and to realize that despite the fact that all of us come from different cultures and backgrounds, we are all in fact very similar. The ASHA centre where the training was held was also a peaceful and magical place that helped to focus on the topic of the project and made this experience unique.

'A Journey Within - Self Awareness and Personal Development of a Youth Worker' project took part on May 9-16 in the beautiful ASHA centre located in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, UK.

The main purpose of the course was to make participants more aware of their own personality, their strenghts and weaknesses in order to become a self-aware and more efficient as an international youth worker and group leader.

During the week, participants of eight european countries (Italy, Poland, Croatia, Greece, UK, Romania, Lithuania, Spain) were able to get in touch with each other, developing intercultural and integration skills that is an important factor in the intercultural dialogue inside the EU.

I was amazed by a great conduct of the course with all the sessions precisely prepared and always interesting. The workshops included elements of theatre, philosophy, self-reflection and self-evaluation techniques, what resulted in a variety of components of the project. Every day was different and introduced a new conclusion.

I found the experience beneficial and enriching.

Thanks to SMIT”Creator” organisation I had a chance to take part in a Training Course “A Journey Within” together with people from 8 countries – Greece, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, UK, Spain and Poland. It was held in the Royal Forest of Dean - an outstandingly beautiful area in the UK and just perfect spot to site the ASHA Centre. This is pretty isolated place that had inspired Tolkien to write “Lord of the Rings”. A place to bring people together, a place to be in touch with Mother Nature. A soul-healing place where magic happens ^^
We began learning 3 main ASHA Centre’s principles, which are: intercultural-dialogue, sustainability and biodynamics, and then a beautiful meaning of ASHA’s word which is.. HOPE.

We’ve started the course with team bonding activities, demanding co-operation and thereby incredibly integrating. Then we used several methods for self-understanding and self-development, e.g. combining elements of theatre, we learnt 4 main temperaments (and its positive and less positive sides), we found out about interconnected personality types and self-evaluation technicques. Apart from that, our extensive program enabled us spending all evenings in very creative and funny way (Passion time with Salsa dancing, a night in British Pub, Intercultural evening), what connected all group even more strongly and made us feel true warmth of a loving home spreading around.
To make long story short, the project made me realise the importance of self-reflection and self-awareness. “It takes courage to endure sharp pain of self-discovery” but it’s really gonna be worth it. I gained mind-blowing and life-changing experiences, met great people (I already miss them), got inspirated and definetely gonna be much more active! Hopefully with SMIT. Thank you soo much ;)
